Why we're drinking this
We’ve been drinking this wine for years—and in fact we remember when it was less than $13 at the LCBO. (OK, we’re old.) This wine has everything going for it, even if the regular price has risen just a titch past the good-value stage. At under $16, we’re happy. This wine is a crowd-pleaser. It’s fruity and fun enough for the non-snob, yet has the depth and Old World narrative that pleases the geek. The wine hails from the island of Sardinia off the west coast of Italy, where the Cannoneau grape flourishes. It's known better as Grenache in France and the New World or as Garnacha in Spain, and is one of the world’s most planted grape.
There’s a pleasing rusticity to this wine. Maybe you can imagine the undulating hills and sun-drenched coast of the island of Sardinia as you taste it. It’s got ample red and black berries, ripe plum and a touch of menthol and herbs, on the nose and palate. Some coffee hints, dried leaves and nuttiness too. That gives it character and complexity. It’s not so much woody as smoky—there’s something charred in the flavour. Tannins are medium, fairly soft, but definitely present—that drying sensation is good for standing up to fatty foods. I’ve not met anyway who’s disliked this wine. And I don’t intend to.
