Why we're drinking this
Amarone is a big, big, big wine. But it’s rarely a brut. In fact, it has a sweet heart. Not sugary sweet, but silky soft. The ripe and concentrated nature of Amarone, though, can make it seem sweeter than other wines. But that’s also the elevated alcohol. Amarone can be very, very expensive. Trophy wines that the hoi polloi (like us) rarely get to taste. But with the Christmas season coming on, and at four bucks off, this wine is more than worth a try. Tedeschi is a fourth generation family winery and they do it right. Wine Spectator magazine gave this wine 91 points can called it “expressive, refined and silky in texture.”
Tasting note
The nose on this wine is fantastic. Right after the cork pops, it’s pure wood, tree bark, damp earth and wet leaves. Maybe some soft leather and then, oh, here comes some red currant, strawberry, red cherry. Then a hint of something herbal… eucalyptus. This wine unfolds aromatically over a few minutes. Give it a swirl, and lean back in. The fruit is coming to the fore. There’s a tension between earthy and fruity. Have a taste. It’s all there again on the palate. But now it’s nutty, with coffee and mocha. The finish lingers... Wow.
