Why we're drinking this
This is a big rustic South African wine that is blatantly unapologetic. You want finesse, keep moving. You want punch, you got it. There’s nothing subtle here, from the fruit to the alcohol to the tannins and finish. Big, big, big! Those warriors out there will like this all on its own, but it’ll shine best with the gamiest meats you can find. A very interesting wine, quite unlike Cab Sauvs from anywhere else — this has a meaty, earthy quality and focus on black fruit and coffee that just seems to scream “South Africa.” Hell, it sure ain’t from Napa!
With a whopping 14.5% alcohol, this wine is verging on Port heft. Huge aromas drift from the glass: blackberry, black currant and plum, lots of spice and coffee bean, and some serious flint and gun smoke. Lots of damp earth and meaty funk. There’s fruit here too, and it’s all in balance. The acid is present, the tannins too. We quite like it on its own but it might challenge some sensitive palates. But with big meats, it’ll make a serious statement. Also good at a poker game. This may well be the perfect wine for wings, the spicier the better. A good, solid, characterful wine — at under $10, you should have some on hand at all times.
