LCBO Sale Pick of the Week: Jan. 16

Beronia 2008 Reserva Rioja (Rioja, Spain)

Sale $16.95, Regular $18.95
Discount (until February 2): $2.00
LCBO - Vintages #50203 | 750 mL bottle

Tastes like: Ripe red fruit, sweet oak, dried herbs, smoke and dust
Pairs with: French onion soup, roast chicken, steak/beef/horse
Good for: Late night TV or Netflix
Drink this: Now through 2016
Alcohol: 14%

Why we're drinking this
Because it came as a gift—and we’ve bought several more since. This is modern Rioja—one of the most celebrated regions of Spain—made by Gonzalez Byass, a top sherry producer with the Tio Pepe label. The Beronia is good stuff at a great price. If you’ve never had Rioja, start here.

Tasting note
The “reserva” designation indicates a minimum of three years ageing before release. In practice, most Rioja reservas are aged longer. So this 2008 is a maturing wine that retains considerable freshness of lovely, ripe fruit. Yes, you can taste the oak—sweet, smoky, vanilla—and feel the somewhat chunky tannins. This gives structure and mouth-filling texture. It’s a full-bodied food wine to be sure, but a great sipper, too, for lovers of formidable character.

Wolf Blass 2012 'Yellow Label' Shiraz (South Australia)

Sale $14.95, Regular $16.95
Discount (until February 2): $2.00
LCBO #506691 | 750 mL bottle

Tastes like: Sunshine! Fresh and juicy black berries, dried herbs and a hint of mint
Pairs with: Lamb of any sort, rich beef stew, poutine (with duck confit on top)
Good for: Après ski fireside
Drink this: Now through 2016
Alcohol: 13.5%

Why we're drinking this
It’s a delicious, very well made wine. Easy drinking, yet with enough stuffing and poise to impress your inner wine snob. Plus, it’s got a maple leaf on the label, marking 30 years of Wolf Blass in the Canadian market and making it the only foreign wine you're allowed to drink while watching the Olympics.

Tasting note
The classic Wolf Blass fruit-and-wood style has been refined of late. Expect less “fruit-bomb” and more balance and grace, with fresher dark berry fruit, lively acid and noticeable but soft tannins. Delightful to drink!

Why we're drinking this
Classic! Made to drink with a plate of antipasto while the pizza cooks or pasta boils, then takes you and the famiglia straight through the main course. It’s not fancy, just good, honest vino.

Tasting note
Light, breezy red with that classic savory note of dusty cherry that’s the hallmark of Chianti. Here’s a clean, well-balanced wine that takes every mouthful of prosciutto, asiago, pizza or pasta up a notch. Prego.

Here’s a bottle that over-delivers. It’s ripe, complex and full of fruit with a fabulous crushed velvet texture. Hard not to like this wine, which makes it an easy go-to bottle for the busy holiday season.

Noble aromas of warm cassis lead to layered flavours of black forest fruit, red and black plum, toasty wood and a smooth creamy milk chocolate finish. Nice.
