  • Bring the best of the harvest home

A big and bold red like this outstanding 2012 Meritage from Redstone achieves its highest potential when paired with similarly rich and complex flavours — which makes it the perfect match for the signature ingredient-led cuisine of Chef Lynn Crawford. Her new cookbook, “Farm to Chef, Vineyard to Home” is packed with recipes made to match with her favourite wines. This Redstone Meritage channels the warm summer 2012 vintage into an impressively structured wine that is full-bodied and generous with flavours of blackberry, cassis and plum, with a little sweet spice. An inspiring wine, supple and beautiful. And very hard to resist.

    Redstone 2012 Meritage

    Good for:
Decanting (if serving soon) for a special meal of umami-rich flavours and bold spicing centred around prime cuts of meat.
Tastes like: Silky plum, cassis, blackberry and raspberry with beautifully integrated sweet spice and subtle smokiness. Superbly structured with bold tannins and complex fruit and savoury flavours.
Drink with: Big meaty dishes such as osso buco, braised lamb shanks, wild boar ragu, Tomahawk steak on the grill… you get the picture.

    Why we're drinking this
The Redstone winery is located in Beamsville, Ont., on a fairly small 38-acre estate known for intense red clay soil and large stones. The soil and the relatively warm climate in the Beamsville area provide ideal conditions for late-ripening grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah and Merlot. That, and the fact that Redstone (which just won Winery of the Year at the National Wine Awards) is run by the same fine people who made the biodynamic Tawse winery into an award-winning operation, means the quality is always top notch. Redstone’s wines were brilliant when they were first introduced with the 2010 vintage — and they just get better and better.

    Tasting note
The Redstone 2012 Meritage is a beautifully structured wine from a great vintage. Sommelier Zoltan Szabo calls it “balanced and delicious with black and blue fruits, warm spice and floral notes.” It’s a delicious wine that’s starting to transition from the freshness of youth (black berries, raspberry, plum and currant) into the more complex hues of a maturing wine (dried fruit, nuts, wildberry jam, cigar box). Beautifully structured, rich and concentrated, full-bodied and powerful, with bold tannins that are ripening nicely. A focused, thoroughly enjoyable wine that wants big, bold meaty flavours. It can be enjoyed now — we suggest decanting — or cellared for another five years.
