Why we're drinking this
This is a white wine with considerable heft for the price (even when it’s not on sale). The current vintage is particularly good, with ripe, fresh flavours indicating the grapes attained maximum ripeness on the vine—no mean feat in fickle Burgundy, where the weather can be particularly mean. There are no green, sour notes here: just pure, lovely, piercing apple, banana, citrus and sweet spice. You can’t do any better at a house-wine price.
This is exactly what you want in mid-priced Burgundy. It’s Chardonnay through and through, with correct notes of apple, a little citrus and some stone fruit (peach, pear). But there’s more: the fruit is so ripe that tropical notes come through, usually an indicator of Chardonnay from a warmer climate like Australia or California, but without the overblown qualities that can come these New World regions. There’s texture here, a supple quality, balanced by crisp acidity, and a dry, savoury finish. This is harmony. If only all wines were this good. Hint: Don’t serve it too cold—let the flavours soar.
