Why we're drinking this
This is a consistently good and well-priced wine that we’ve tried over very many vintages, and we’re always impressed. It’s a crowd-pleaser too. Even though it’s a mature wine—reservas are aged at least three years before being released—it retains enough fruit freshness to balanced the evolving flavours of sweet spice and tobacco.
Tasting note
There’s a nice, smooth quality to this wine, yet it retains a rustic edge that places it squarely in Spain, where they love to give their robust reds some hefty exposure to oak barrels. But it’s not over-wrought—the oak lends texture and some sweet spice, plus notes of vanilla and cigar box. Sounds manly, right? It’s not really. The fruit is juicy and ripe, with lots of cherry, blackberry and plum. The blend is 80% Tempranillo, with some Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot making up the balance. It’s got an herbal note to it, and some earthiness. Makes it perfect for the outdoors, in the deep wilds of your backyard—just close your eyes, say “olé” and be transported in your mind to a patio in Madrid. Bliss.
