Why we're drinking this
OK, we're returning to one of our favourites. In honour of Father’s Day, we suggest stocking up with a few bottles and some hunks of meat for the BBQ and give Dad a real treat—one that won’t break your bank. This is a stellar price for a very well made basic Chianti. Basic doesn’t mean cheap or inferior, as this has full DOCG status, which means it’s achieved the highest quality rating of the Chianti appellation. This wine is food friendly, approachable and just real easy to love.
Tasting note
You could call this Chianti for newbies. (Though us oldbies like it too.) This is a generous wine, with lovely fresh red fruit (cherries, raspberry) dominating, along with some plum and blueberry, and a whiff of sandalwood and sweet spice (clove). The tannins are super smooth, but just grippy enough to do good work with pizza with red sauce, simple pasta or a nice veal parm or scaloppini. Bring this home to Nonna, make her proud. (Even if you’re not Italian. Just do it.)
