Why we're drinking this
If you’ve heard of the wines of Chile, then you’ve heard of the Maipo Valley, one of the country’s most famous wine-producing regions, near Santiago. Maipo produces classically herbal cabernets: think bay leaf and thyme, a nice savoury quality that complements the rich fruit. This wine is grown at some elevation in the foothills of the Andes, which means the cooler mountain air and ocean breezes from the Pacific provide the necessary foil to the warm sun, resulting in wines that are well-balanced, vibrant and ripe.
Tasting note
This is a gentle cab with lovely soft and ripe red and black fruit, and a nice silky yet solid feel in the mouth. We love texture in our wines, as it tends to indicate some finesse in the winemaking, and less manipulation. The tannins here are soft and ripe, and the acidity is just vibrant enough to make this a refreshing sipper. It’s got a nice savoury quality, some characteristic cabernet pencil lead notes, and just a touch of toasty cedar. A little bit of Syrah (4%) adds some red fruit and spicy juiciness. There’s real elegance in here—quite amazing at this price.
