Why we're drinking this
We took a flyer on this one—grabbed it off the shelf and brought it home to tackle charcoal-grilled burgers. This is from the Veneto region of northern Italy, around Venice and Verona. Much of this region churns out pretty basic, pretty bulky wines. This one, though, has a little more personality, with bright sour cherry and herbal/savoury character that is quite expressive and lively. Overall it’s a pretty soft and easy wine for casual banter and erudite conversation—made better if you keep a few nice cheeses on the table.
Tasting note
This has a pretty nose: sour cherry, a hint of mint, and some dried herbs. It’s a solid, straight-up Cabernet Franc, a grape that can be quite leafy in aroma. This is okay if you like that character (and we do). So while it’s a soft wine with low, ripe tannins and a rather supple texture, it’s got a little bite of acidity and “greenness.” That makes for a nice contrast. It’s easy to sip, but does nicely with those burgers mentioned above. And after dinner, it remains a nice companion.
