Nugan Estate Alfredo 2012 Second Pass Shiraz (South Eastern Australia)

Sale $13.95, Regular $15.95
Discount (until Nov. 9): $2.00
LCBO # 368811 | 750 mL bottle

Tastes like: Classic Aussie Shiraz: spicy red berries—fresh and dried—and black pepper.
Pairs with: Anything on the barbie.
Good for: Talking about dingos.
Drink this: Now to 2016.
Alcohol: 14%

Why we're drinking this
Honestly, we’re not drinking it for the label—it’s fugly. Also, we normally reject any wine that has the word “passion” on its front label (or, for that matter, the back). But if we close our eyes and take a sip, all’s forgiven. This is a classic Aussie Shiraz in a nice, clean, modern style. And it’s cheap as Aussie dirt.

Tasting note
Generous ripe red and black fruit on the nose, with that characteristic Aussie Shiraz spice and a hint of herbals (mint). It seems a little more restrained than the typical fruit bombs of South Eastern Australia—thank the gods. For the price, it has remarkable structure and mouth-feel (apologies for the geek-speak). Translation: it’s silk and feels nice in the mouth. You want to take another sip, and another. It’s got bright acidity, soft tannins and harmonious balance. This is a $20 wine masquerading as a cheapie. Superbly quaffable.
