Why we're drinking this
Sometimes you taste a wine that makes you go “wow.” This is such a wine. Amaral is a relatively new brand, founded in 2006 with a focus on Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay—all grapes that excel in a so-called “cool climate” environment. The wines come from the Leyda Valley, southwest of Santiago and about 12 kilometers from the Pacific Ocean. It’s the sea’s cold Humboldt current that chills the grapes in a good way, leading to a long ripening season that brings out the absolute best of Sauvignon Blanc qualities.
Tasting note
The nose is classic Sauvignon Blanc with aromas of fresh cut grass, fresh summer peas, lime zest and grapefruit. These notes are precisely echoed on the palate, with lively acidity and nice balance. This wine just tastes “alive”—it has some serious personality. The finish is long. At a recent tasting of a wide range of Chilean wines, Vines magazine editor and critic Christopher Waters noted: “It’s a real eye-opener!” At $13.95, it’s a serious deal. At another $2 off, it’s time to stock up. It’s drinking perfectly now, and could hold for up to a year, but it’s not going to improve with long-term ageing.
