Why we're drinking this
Now that Chardonnay isn’t hip anymore, we’re drinking more of it. OK, that’s being facetious. But this Chardonnay is intriguing and a bit of an odd bird. If you tried last week’s recommendation—the Ghost Pines from California—just know that this is the complete opposite. Louis Jadot has done a spectacular job of capturing the flavour profile of a maturing wine, even thought this is the 2013 vintage. It’s got the nutty, leesy, somewhat funky qualities of a top quality Burgundy that’s got a few years under its belt. For less than $17, that’s quite a feat. Try it—you’ll like it.

Tasting note
There’s some good oak at work here. It’s not the buttery richness of the Ghost Pines, but rather the nutty smoothness of older barrels, ones that have been filled once or twice before seeing this wine. This wine also has the oxidative quality brought on by some time on lees (the yeast cells left over after fermentation), a process that introduces more complexity to the wine. What does this all mean to you, the thirsty wine lover? Just that this is a much leaner, racier wine than your usual California or Canadian fare. We tasted this with Zoltan Szabo, kwäf Taste Bud and sommelier, and he noted the citrus elements upfront, then some nutty “broken hazelnut shells” and then a very crisp finish of lime. Serious, but approachable. This is a wine that grows on you as you sip it—we couldn’t leave it alone, and finished the bottle in record time. This is a compelling wine. It’s deep, man.
