Why we're drinking this
Sparkling wine is one of our favourite things. It matches just about any food and turns any occasion into a special occasion. Some of the best sparkling wines in the world come from Penedès, in the Catalan region, just south of Barcelona. They’re also some of the best values in wine, representing centuries of tradition and artisanal technique. These wines are called Cava (the Catalan word for “cave”) and are made in very similar methods to those of Champagne. A second fermentation of the wine occurs right in the bottle—and that’s where the bubbles come from. This method creates a very fine, creamy “mousse” which delivers that silky mouth feel that makes us all giddy and giggly. From humble beginnings as a family enterprise 150 years ago, Freixenet is now the number one sparkling wine in the world.
Tasting note
Superbly crisp, clean and bright citrus flavours with an underlying mineral note, which we prefer to describe as “wet stone.” There’s a little green apple and pear in there too. This is a delightful wine, and cheap enough that you can maintain several bottles on hand at all times. Serve it very cold, either on its own or—for New Year’s morning—with a splash or two of fresh-squeezed orange juice. Happy 2015!
