Why we're drinking this
Spain is producing exceptional value these days. Buried Hope is a modern “brand” wine—you’ll see this Tempranillo on the shelves just down the row from the Buried Hope Cabernet Sauvignon from California. It’s a truly global affair! But nevermind the business strategy, this is a solid wine from a reliable yet under-rated Spanish wine region called Ribera del Douro. It’s in north central Spain, near famed Rioja. And, yes, the Douro river cuts right through it. Many of the wines from this region that you’ll find at the LCBO are good value, well-made, modern and approachable.

Tasting note
Super deep colour—the Spaniards tend to think we’re impressed by opacity—and brimming with sweet and spicy red (cherry, raspberry) and black fruit (blueberry, plum). It’s got leather and oak too. Take a big whiff and enjoy. The nose is fragrant, perfumed and lovely. In the mouth, this is medium-bodied and a tad rustic. That’s a polite way of saying it’s a bit wild and a little untamed, but we like it rough (ahem). This wine has something to say, and it’s nice to drink on its own or with a little nibble. Try it with snacks of all sorts, as long as they’re salty and meaty. Manchego cheese would be perfection.
