Why we're drinking this
Honestly, a decent Pinot Grigio (aka Pinot Gris) is hard to find. Alsace does it well, as does Italy. And the New World is starting to get it together. But this poor grape gets a bum rap as the cocktail wine of choice for those who don’t really like wine. Weak Pinot Gris can be thin, flavourless and banal. But this Bollini is a wholly different beast. It’s got serious personality and, as we like to say, kwäffability. The wine is made in the northern Italian region of Trentino-Alto Aldige, surrounded by the snow-capped peaks of the Alps and Dolomites. Picturesque, to be sure — and a great spot for crisp, aromatic wines.
Tasting note
Delicately fragrant of pear, apple and citrus with a hint of wet stone and spice. It’s a very pretty perfume. In the mouth, it has more intensity and nerve, with zippy acidity that carries lovely fresh fruit and a noticeably supple, almost buttery, texture. Concentrated and full of life, it’s not your usual off-the-shelf Grigio. A great food wine with lovely body, acidity and spicy notes, it’s also a wonderful sipper (that fruit salad character is quite irresistible). Well done, Bollini!
