Why we're drinking this
A truly legendary and much-heralded Italian winery, Frescobaldi packs more than 700 years of winemaking history into every bottle (okay, that sounded a bit advert-y). But you get the drift. We’re lucky that Canada is a major market for these wines, and you’ll find quite a nice variety of their labels in the marketplace, ranging from entry-level Chianti to uber-premium Super Tuscans. It’s safe to say that just about any of their wines are worth a try. This full-bodied Tuscan blend is primarily made with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, supported by a small amount of Sangiovese and Cabernet Franc.
Dark and almost opaque, with generous aromas of plum, sweet spice, toasty oak, black berries, earth and dried leaves and a hint of dried herbs. The Cabernet Sauvignon is really at the fore here. The palate is dry with lots of dark fruit, oak spice, chocolate and pencil lead. It’s got a nice mineral and nutty quality, very much “of the earth.” Tannins are medium and chewy. A big expressive wine, something weighty and complex, best for dining rather than partying. Would age nicely a few years. Match it with lamb, beef or a wild boar ragu. Note: The bottle states 13% alcohol while the LCBO website states 14%. It feels like it’s right down the middle, so let’s say 13.5%.
