Why we're drinking this
This is a superb deal in a serious, weighty Cabernet for an outstanding price. Santa Carolina produces very good wines pretty much across the board and we’re lucky to see quite a few of them at the LCBO. This one comes from Chile’s Maipo Valley, one of the world’s great regions for growing Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s got the altitude of the Andes mountains along with the cool evening breezes that Cabernet loves. They don’t call this region “the Bordeaux of South America” for nothing!
Tasting note
Medium aromas of plum, blackberry, blackcurrant, boysenberry and cassis. There’s plenty of characteristic Maipo herbaceousness, with eucalyptus and rosemary. This wine is a nice blend of new world and old, with that pretty fresh berry quality underlined by notes of graphite, cigar box, white mushroom and forest floor. A long, dry finish reveals flavours of coffee, almond and concrete. The tannins are a little crunchy, but ripening, and the texture is supple. Overall, a very nice wine (let’s go with 89+) with some serious heft and potential to age several years.
