Why we're drinking this
It’s interesting that wines that come from cool climates are great for drinking in hot
climates. Or hot weather. Sancerre hails from the Loire Valley in France, where a cool
northerly climate and chalky soils combine to create what is perhaps the perfect
rendition of the Sauvignon Blanc grape. These wines are the epitome of crisp, and the
Henri Bourgeois never fails to please. It’s a regular on the Vintages shelves for good
reason. And though the price has crept up these last few years, you really do get what
you pay for. It’s worth it. (So are you.)

Tasting note
Sauvignon Blanc from the Loire seems, in comparison to the young upstarts from the
New World (that is, Canada, New Zealand, etc.), rather more refined and — what’s the
word? — integrated. This wine takes that characteristic green-grass nose and mellows it
out. In this 2016 vintage, it’s a citrus bonanza of lime, lemon and grapefruit. Fresh and
dried grass, almost a sense of wild meadow. At just two grams per litre of sugar left, this
is a brightly acidic wine. And that’s a good thing. Light, crisp, lemony and electric — all
that we love in Sauvignon Blanc.
