Why we're drinking this
The house of Latour knows Burgundy. They should, seeing as they’ve been making wines across that great and glorious land since the early 1700s. It might be a stretch for you, as it is for me, to afford the three-figure wines of their famed vineyards in the communes of Aloxe-Corton or Chambertin, but we can damn well afford $20 for one of their Bourgogne-designated Pinot Noirs. Rather than coming from a single precious parcel of land, the grapes for the Bourgogne wines can hail from anywhere in the region. Sure, they aren’t the prized beauties of the ball, but their still resolutely “Burgundy.” Not all Bourgogne wines are this good (so be careful), but these guys at Latour have a name and a brand to protect. They don’t mess around.
Pretty black cherry and currants greet the nose, with some lovely violet florals and scents of wild strawberry bushes. A lovely perfume, fresh and inviting. The wine is dry and bright, and quite light in the mouth, with nice soft leather and earthy hints. Swirls of blue and red berries tease the tongue, with easy tannins and lively acidity. Burgundies at this level and price point are often thin and simplistic — not this one. The fruit is ripe and expressive. It’s a lovely sipper, but don’t go crazy with food pairings. Keep it basic so as not to overpower the wine. Soft cheeses, good bread, maybe a duck breast or steak tartare — that’s all you need.
