Why we're drinking this
Allegrini is a leading producer in the Veneto region of northern Italy. It’s the only Veneto producer to clinch the coveted “Tre Bicchieri”—or “three glasses”—award from the Vini d’Italia Gambero Rosso wine guide. That award went to Allegrini’s Amarone, a much bigger and more prestigious wine than this little Rosso. But still, when the big sister does well, the lineage is in good hands. But here’s something even cooler: CEO Marilisa Allegrini is the first Italian woman to be featured solo on the cover of Wine Spectator magazine. That happened just this past April.
Deeply coloured, almost opaque ruby, this wine coats your glass. But it’s no monster. Fruity, yes, but at 13.5% alcohol, it’s still adequately restrained. The nose is plummy, with blackberry and menthol, and it’s a bit herbaceous. But that’s a nice tension with the jammy, rich fruit—it’s all nicely balanced by acidity and spice. Easy drinking. A good winter wine that won’t tire you out. Serve it up with meat stews and casseroles, braises, quail or Cornish hen, a striploin. Quite a versatile wine.
