Why we're drinking this
This is a killer wine at a killer (sale) price at $16.95. It’s also one of the best under-$20 (regular price) Shiraz wines you’ll find anywhere. Kilikanoon is located in the Clare Valley of South Australia. It’s one of Australia’s oldest wine regions, about 100 km from Adelaide, with a reputation for good to excellent wines. Kilikanoon is a newbie, established in 1997. They make a wide range of wines, both in terms of grapes and price points. Killerman’s Run is the entry level. It’s pretty damn good.
Perfumed and pretty, with wafts of black berry, black cherry, black currant (you get the picture). Soft sweet spice of vanilla-chocolate, toasty oak and some black tar and olive. There’s a bit of classic Shiraz meatiness, but just a touch — and you might miss it. The alcohol is elevated at 14.5%, but you don’t really notice it. Especially if, as the label recommends, you chill the wine to 16 to 18C. They say this will help you to “enjoy all those ripe fruit flavours” but it’s really about taking the heat out of the equation. And that’s ok. Most red wines are better with a bit of chill. This is a wonderful wine, great for daily drinking as a house pick. It has complexity beyond its price. Show no fear, serve this with pride. Give it richly textured foods that will complement its silky, generous qualities. Or, just drink it.
