Tastes like: A peach and citrus fruit salad, with hints of mint and chive and a long fruity/savoury finish. Intriguing.
Pairs with: Grilled lemon chicken, pho with lots of lemongrass, chicken and broccoli stir fry, pan fried pickerel, mojo-sauced pork tenderloin. Go with citrus and fresh herbs and you’ll be fine.
Good for: The perfect foil to sweltering, humid heat. If we get any this summer, you’ll need this on hand.
Alcohol: 13%
Drink: Now.
Why we're drinking this
Summertime with a crisp and savoury New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc just makes sense. Now, some palates find NZ SB to be a bit harsh on the “cat-pee- and-cut- grass” side of the fence, but Astrolabe counters with a wine with much more finesse and delicacy. It’s also got a lot more complexity — a confluence of tropical fruits, green-ness, and savoury qualities — that is quite inviting. This is quite an elegant wine. Try it, you’ll like it.
Tasting note
Fresh nose of citrus fruit salad, with tropicals like grapefruit and pineapple leading to savoury chive, dill, peppermint and lime. Quite fluid and delicate on the palate, but with some heft from ripe fruit flavours: peach, melon, citrus and juicy ripe apple. More peppermint on the finish, which lingers nicely. Quite a mouthful of flavours here and very delicious. Serve it really cold on a warm day and let it lose some chill as as you sip — layers of fruit and vegetal flavours will reveal themselves. Quite a bit of fun for the sun.
