• A rare wine from a rare vintage

  Tastes like
  Red and black berries, fresh and preserved, with lovely sweet earthy and savoury notes of leather, cigar box and sweet spices. Firm dusty tannins and a solid savoury finish.
  Good for
  An occasion. This isn’t a stuffy wine but it deserves some considered accompaniments and your undivided attention. Decanting seems in order, to give it some room to strut.
  Pairs with
  Roasted critters with lots of herb and spice and earthy flavours. Baked vegetable dishes, herbed and cheesy potatoes, etc. Don’t be shy with herbs and funky flavours.

  Why we're drinking this
  This single-vineyard Palatine Hills Meritage is a rare treat, only made in the very best vintages. And in fact, this is the very first time it’s ever been made. Yeah, 2012 was pretty awesome, with a warm early spring and a nice long fall. So here you go: a beautifully balanced blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cab Franc that’s had five years to get ready to blow your taste buds. We think it’s pretty darned good or we wouldn’t be telling you about it.

  Tasting note
  The problem with this wine is that if you decant it before your guests arrive, you might be tempted to have a glass “just to be sure.” And we all know what that can lead to. Ripe red and black berries, both fresh and preserved. Sweet spice and a little oak, some beautifully soft leather and cigar box. A little savoury herb action. Firm dusty tannins and juicy acidity. Excellent supple texture and a medium-plus finish, with good flavour balance. A complex wine that also reveals a very accessible fruit character—which is to say, don’t overthink it. You’ll know why this is good when you taste it.
