  Why we're drinking this
  Here’s a lesson: never assume that a “teaching” winery will put out wine with training wheels. Pretty much every wine we’ve tasted from the Niagara College Teaching Winery has been an eye opener. But this 2012 Merlot takes it up a notch. Sure, it was a really good vintage, the warm, easy fall developing ripe, clean fruit. But these student kids really know what they’re doing. This Merlot took a bronze medal at the National Wine Awards of Canada in 2014, but we think it’s even better now. If you’ve ever wondered what maturing Merlot is capable of, then you need to try this. It’s a sexy beast.

  Tasting Note
  This is a beautifully developing Merlot. You can taste the quality of the fruit and the wonderful concentration. Says kwäf Taste Bud Zoltan Szabo: “This is a really elegant, old-school red, with aromas and flavours of dried berries, morels, soft-cured leather and a savoury vinous tone.” It has a “mature nose with spice, leather, Christmas cake, berry preserves and stewed plum,” notes sommelier Lindsay Groves. The wine’s velvety texture is particularly notable, and its tannins are silky smooth. The finish is long and smooth. A wine like this is a rare treat, and it really shows off the apex of quality that Ontario wines are capable of attaining. The kwäf Taste Buds rate this 90+ points, with full standing ovation.
