Why we're drinking this
It’s a damn fine wine from a damn fine winemaker. Thomas Bachelder is legendary (and still so young!) for his own Bachelder label of internationally vinted wines. He creates super-premium award-winners in Ontario, Oregon and France. With Domaine Queylus he turns his attention to the pristine Niagara vineyards where we nurtures the Bordeaux varieties Merlot and Cabernet Franc. This is a relatively new winery, yet has already garnered the Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Excellence in Ontario Wine in 2014. Says the winemaker: “This Domaine Queylus Cabernet Franc-Merlot Réserve 2012 is a rich yet fine, elegant, ‘European-styled’ terroir-based wine, from perfectly-ripened grapes after a long dry, warm summer.” Good enough for us!
Tasting Note
The kwäf panel was blown away with this wine, rating it 91 points. We noted its generous and perfumed nose of wild, spicy raspberries and blackberries, sour cherry, cassis, cedar and stony/mineral elements. “Super-smooth, lively in the mouth, with ripe extracted fruit and supple texture, almost velvety,” says wine expert Dick Snyder. This is a wine of considerable power and finesse, a new benchmark for Cabernet Franc-Merlot blends in Niagara. Says Zoltan Szabo: “It’s like a fine American automobile with a high horsepower European engine.” Brilliantly balanced acidity and soft tannins, with a long lingering finish. Lindsay Groves calls it “dangerously delicious.”
